A Canadian teacher in China

What a week

Aetoluspiccolor

This is a picture I drew just after moving to Korea. I made it to represent a character I had written about for the “Psycho-Six” stories my friends and I had been writing. I have not heard from a lot of these people for a while, only 2 come to mind, I hope the rest are doing well for themselves. For those of you who came to the Blog-site, you will notice I have started to put 1 of those stories up, I will be editing and updating it as we go (and I have time).

1 Week to Thanksgiving, and we have a lot of planning to do. This is our first Thanksgiving EVER. In China we would forget about it, because there was no external reminder and in class we were teaching American Thanksgiving (Same Holiday, just 1 month later). We are having a few people over, mostly from the Mainland Vancouver area. Will Post pics on the Facebook page during and after the event. ^_^.

On a Culture note: I have been told I am too “f&*^%ing sensitive” about this, (By a man from Ontario), but have we as Canadians started using the “F” word for everything while I was gone, or am I just meeting the wrong people since I got back? Now to be fair it isn’t everyone I see, but a lot of people in the Vancouver area I see cannot make a sentence without placing the dreaded word in there at least once or twice. It’s comparatively bad to the 1980’s with the word “like.” they’re not even using the word properly. An example I hear the other day was “I’m going to go F–ing shower and f—ing pick you up then go F– that party!”  and generally when they use this word they make sure everyone in the area can hear their profanity with a smile on their face.

Now, coming from a culture of freedom of speech, I believe in their right to swear. But my curiosity come from why do people believe that they have to do so in every sentence?

So I shall leave you with Happy Thanksgiving! and please don’t go F—- that turkey.

Angel Irish

I decided to start posting some of my art slowly in here.

This is a picture I originally drew back in 2006 I believe, when I first started dating Irish (my Wife). Now I do not have a scanner, so I took a snapshot of the picture with the tablet camera, then re-sketched over the picture with pixlr.com’s picture editor. when I get a scanner I’ll upload the original.

Schools Galore

Yesterday Morning we took the 2 children to school for their first day back in School. As we sat in the gymnasium, I made a few observations that I hadn’t thought about before. My son, having just come from school in China had never seen a drinking fountain before, so he and his sister were fascinated by this, for about 30 minutes. They kept going back to drink every 2 minutes while we waited for a teacher to come and sort him into his class. He was shocked to find soap and a hand blow dryer on the wall of the bathroom. Now the school I left in China did have bottles of soap, but they were not fastened to the wall. So he thought this was cool.

Then it occurred to me that my son will be going to school for 3 hours less than when he was in China. While living in Beijing, We had to have him at school by 7:00, and he left school after 4:00. His new school he has to be at by 8:30, and he leaves at 2:30. So outside activities can commence. The playgrounds have about a dozen swings and 3 or 4 slides. His Chinese school had neither slide nor swings. (They both had jungle gyms)

And in other news…

Last Update, I told you I had been given a job. Well that job had fallen through. They decided to keep me as a teacher on call, but did not bother to inform me of this. I went to the school on Saturday morning to get my schedule for the week and discovered that I had none.

So. Yesterday a good friend of mine drove me to some Warehousing agencies, and I put my applications in there. I can work the days I want with most of them. While out I dropped by 2 ESL colleges  I happen to see, and they were both very impressed with my info. 1 Wanted me to do a trial class in Richmond at a later date. Then today I went to Richmond for a 3rd school’s interview, they want me to do a test class tomorrow afternoon (3~5pm) at their Surrey Branch.

I have been thinking about checking if there is 1/2 day work tomorrow for warehousing available, but I think I will use that time to prepare for the class now….
